History

The family

The Dudley Arms is a 17th Century coaching inn which has been owned by the Staples family for nearly 50 years.

Craig and Bet Staples took on the Dudley Arms in June 1969 after working as a fine meats purveyor in a very successful family butchers & snack bar on Stockton High Street. Craig wanted to draw upon his knowledge within the meat industry and embark on a new chapter, still keeping his focus on butchering; the Dudley Arms became famous for its steaks. Taking up a new challenge with a busy, young family, the idea of running The Dudley Arms must have been a daunting one, but they certainly made a good impression quickly, by changing around the whole pub to allow more areas for eating and adding the large extension to the restaurant and the Bistro. The Dudley has over the last 50 years built up a huge following of steak & seafood loving customers, who return time & time again.

Since those early days the young family have subsequently taken over the reins of the business and have continued to operate in well-established family tradition.

Apart from our restaurant the Dudley boasts another unique feature being the speciality starter known as “The Flowering Onion” which has become our most popular starter over the years.

To this day the Dudley Arms stays within the Staples Family and in June 2019 the Dudley will celebrate its 50th Anniversary when we will be organising some special events to mark the occasion.
